Will the battery in your electric vehicle get old and stop working?

Many electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries – similar to those used in your cell phones or laptops. The difference between those batteries and the batteries in electric vehicles is that the batteries in EVs are designed to last longer than smaller consumer grade batteries. This is done through a variety of methods including ensuring that the EV batteries never charge fully or run out of charge completely (even if your dash tells you otherwise!).

Does the battery lose its charge when parked and switched off?

Yes they actually do! Lithium batteries using older technology will lose their charge faster than newer batteries – newer lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles are better at holding their state-of-charge. Also interesting to note is that electric vehicles parked in either extremely warm or cool conditions may lose their charge slightly faster as energy may be used to keep the engine at a safe temperature.

Does cold weather affect your electric vehicle?

Lower temperatures do affect electric vehicles performance and efficiency. This can lead to reduced acceleration and range. To add to this reduced performance, heating your car’s cabin will further reduce your car’s charge.
