Car safety check – when do you need to replace your tyres?

One of the benefits of driving an electric car is that they don’t get serviced like your petrol or diesel varieties – this means fewer visits to the dealer. This does not mean – however – that you can just ignore tyre wear and tear!

Your tyre pressure is not a concern for your Tesla rental car as our team makes sure your car is in tip top condition!

However, checking your tyres regularly is good practice – it’s helpful to add them as part of your routine. If you drive a lot, then a good purchase is a tyre pressure gauge – which you can keep handy in your car. Tyre pressure gauges are inexpensive and are readily available.

So when do you need to replace your tyres – and how will you know when it’s time?

You’ll need to replace your tyres as a result of wear and tear – usually after a certain period of time or after a certain number of kilometres. The other reason you’re most likely to replace your tyres is from unexpected damage – such as a burst tyre, damage from an accident or a puncture.

Wear and tear happens to your tyres’ tread from just normal driving – this is where the rubber is worn down over time. Your tyre has various tread-wear indicators, which are designed to make it easy to know when it’s time to replace your tyres. If any of the tread of your tyre is worn down to any of the indicators it means that the tread is at or below 1.5mm. This means the tyres are no longer roadworthy and it’s critical that you get new tyres.

Other damage can include punctures (which may just need a patch repair), cuts or even sidewall damage – some of which may mean you’ll need a new tyre.

Rotating your tyres can make them last longer – rotating your tyres at regular intervals, such as every 5000km, can help create even wear and tear in the overall tread.

It’s important to keep in mind that your tyres will still need attention – even for your EV!
